Peranakan Beaded Slippers

Intricately hand-beaded slippers

Painstakingly handsewn bead by bead, it take days for a simple design to months for a complex design with small beads to complete a pair of Peranakan slippers. They originated in the early 20th century and were worn by the Peranakan, Chinese descendants who settled in the Malay archipelago. Most traditional designs are of flowers such as peonies, butterflies, and birds. More recently, fashionable modern patterns have emerged. As fewer artisans take up this time-consuming craft, these intricate slippers are becoming more coveted and treasured.
